Index 2 Icon, now in its third incarnation, is about painting and photography. It explores my preoccupation with a project I call "Painting the Already Pictured". Many artists have been concerned with ideas of copying and working with photographic images in the process of exploring formal relationships.
Index 2 Icon looks at what happens when artists turn a photographic source (index) into a painting (icon).
A
photographic source, a slice of life, serves as the index, a
first-degree image, a register of reality. The time-consuming process
of selecting, composing, and painting in response to this index
attenuates but does not disconnect its link to a prior reality. The
icon, a second-degree image, is more general, universal, and
timeless.
